Welcome to Myo & Me!
Based in London within the UK, we offer Myofunctional Therapy to help you breathe easier, chew and swallow better, improve sleep quality and reduce tension across the tongue and jaw. We empower you to form new habits that help your mouth and face muscles work and behave in the way they should.
Conditions we treat
Mouth breathing
Mouth breathing is a common sign of orofacial myofunctional disorders and can affect the structure of the face. One of the most important outcomes we aim for through Myofunctional Therapy is a shift from mouth to nasal breathing.
Poor oral posture
Poor oral posture can visibly affect how the face looks and grows. Myofunctional Therapy teaches the tongue and lips to rest comfortably in the right place, promoting a healthier posture and supporting oral development.
Improper swallowing
We swallow 500-1000 times every day, but improper swallowing can cause dental, cosmetic and digestive problems. Myofunctional Therapy retrains the facial muscles to function correctly and eliminate poor swallowing patterns.
What is Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy?
Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy (OMT) is a form of physical therapy. Orofacial means ‘of the mouth and face’, while Myofunctional means ‘muscle function’. Myofunctional therapy reteaches your orofacial muscles – the muscles of your head and neck area – how they should work and behave, to correct any bad habits that have formed.
You gain muscle memory by repeating the same activity many times, like when you play sports or type on a keyboard. Myofunctional therapy does this for a targeted set of oral and facial muscles. This is a gradual process and is best delivered through a course of therapy that is tailored to the individual.
The four goals of Myofunctional Therapy
Nasal breathing, day and night
Proper resting position of the tongue in the mouth
A closed mouth/lip seal at rest and while chewing
A correct swallowing pattern
Benefits of Myofunctional Therapy
We work with patients to see significant improvements such as:
- A feeling of ‘easier’ overall breathing
- A reduction in the severity of sleep-disordered breathing
- Better chewing and swallowing
- Increased range of motion in the tongue and jaw
- Less tension and improved posture
Patients are far more likely to achieve these if they fully commit to completing their course of Myofunctional Therapy.
